John Robert Cozens (1752-1797), Arriccia 1782. Given to Leeds Art Gallery by Sir Michael Sadler in memory of Lady Sadler
Michael Sadler was one of the great art collectors of his time. He acquired work by both 'great names' (Cezanne, Gaugin, Kandinsky, Moore) as well as those less well known today (Hercules Brabazon Brabazon, Marius Bauer). He had a particular interest in British 18th century landscape watercolours and drawings by early 20th century British artists.
Sadler bought and sold works throughout his life but at the same time donated works to the City Art Gallery and University Gallery at Leeds where he was Vice-Chancellor of the University, and first Chairman of the Leeds Art Collections Fund. He made a major donation to his home town of Barnsley and other collections nationwide.
In his talk, Benedict Read will examine the whole range of Sadler's collectiing and attempt to identify the personality lying behind his collecting activity.
