In this talk Jon Wood, Research Curator at the Henry Moore Institute, looks at the sculpture of Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (1891-1915), reconsidering it in the cultural context of London in the years before the First World War. It looksat his place as a young sculptor, affiliated with a number of artistic groups in these years, and looks again at the social and artistic agency of his works within these circles.

The talk considers the careful construction of his artistic identity by himself and his supporters, his use of portraiture, at his small-scale, portable works designed to be held in the hand and at his work for both Omega and Vorticist groups.
