Rene's Room by Winifred Nicholson. Bought by Leeds Art Collections Fund 1936
Anne Goodchild will talk about that part of Wood's extensive correspondence which dates from the last four years of his life, and was sent to the Nicholsons who he hadmet in 1926. It is addressed in the main to Winifred with whom he shared a particular affinity, and casts a remarkably honest and passionate light on his personal struggle to identify and express his vision.
The letters have been regularly quoted from in biographical material on Wood, but have not previously been published as a whole.
Anne Goodchild is a writer and independent curator, formerly senior curator with Sheffield Galleries and Museums Trust.
This talk is scheduled to coincide with the major exhibition 'Art and Life', focusing on the relationships between the Nicholsons and Wiliam Staite-Murray, Alfred Wallis and Christopher Wood. It takes place at Leeds Art Gallery from 18 October 2013 to 12 January 2014.
