The 2021 AGM lecture by Professor Ann Sumner, is on the sculptor Mitzi Cunliffe.
Cunliffe (1918-2006) was born in New York City and came to live in Manchester in 1949. Members who attended the art trail at the University of Leeds may recall her sculpture for the façade of the Man-Made Fibres Building. She was an official sculptor for the Festival of Britain in 1951, and was also a designer of jewellery and textiles. In 1955 she designed the theatrical mask which has been used as for the annual awards presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
Ann will share her research into the life and work of this fascinating woman, whose contribution to British Art is currently being re-evaluated. Ann has dedicated the lecture to the late Ben Read, former Chair of the LAF, who inspired her research into Cunliffe.
