A proposal for the park at Harewood House, 1800
To mark the bicentenary of the death of Humphry Repton (1752-1818), this lecture by Dr Patrick Eyres will discuss his innovative role as professional landscape gardener and successor to 'Capability' Brown. In particular it will explore the idea of the Red Book, which he devised to present hand-written, illustrated design proposals in the form of unique artwork.
Of the nine Yorkshire Red Books, four were for aristocratic estates (including Wentworth Woodhouse and Harewood), another three for gentry patrons and the largest were for self-styled 'gentlemen merchants' of Leeds at Oulton Hall and Armley House.
In association with the Leeds Library as part of their 250th anniversary celebrations.
