Inner Sea

Lewty, Simon (b. 1941), Not known, Pencil, crayon, watercolour, ink, on paper

A British painter, born in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, Lewty studied first at Mid-Warwickshire School of Art, then, from 1957 to 1960, at Hornsey College of Art. He came to prominence in the 1980s with a solo exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery. Lewty creates work that mixes text with picture. Some of his pictures are based on a map of Warwickwhire, where he used to live, and he draws images symbolizing his memories of the place. His work is represented in a number of public collections, including the British Museum and the V & A. Inner Sea was bought with the aid of a contribution from the LACF in 1995.
